Book Post #5: Stargirl

Stargirl happens to be one of my all-time favorite books for young adults. The reason being, it got me through some really hard times. The book itself revolves around stargirl, a strange, original, funny, giving person who other people first love and then reject. At first they love her for her strangeness, try to emulate it, but in the end she is not like them. She will not hate like they hate. So they turn away from her.

Movie Post #5: Kiki’s Delivery Service

Kiki’s Delivery Service is a charming animated film by Studio Ghibli directed by Miyazaki, a renowned animator. I didn’t appreciate his films as much when I was younger; their slow, even pace and subtle characterization went right over my head. As I get older I appreciate the messages in his films much more, especially this film. Other titles by him that hold me in thrall are Spirited Away and Howl’s Moving Castle (HMC is a book I also own and have read and it is just as charming as the film itself).

The two themes that struck me upon reviewing the film were inspiration/ambition, and classicism/fitting in. They are two themes I relate to, especially the first as a writer.
